How Sugar came to be

I had just moved here to Oak Harbor from back East and didn’t know a soul! I had found a job at a salon here in town but, I was struggling making minimum wage. I happened to be booked with a Brazilian wax and not wanting to turn down the booking, I naively thought, “I can wax brows, and waxing is waxing, so how hard could it be?” After binging on Brazilians via YouTube University, I felt reasonably confident I could do this service.

Well, let me tell you, that was one of the DUMBEST things I ever did and one thing became crystal clear, I needed some actual training on how to do this service properly. While I feel still awful for that client, I am grateful for that humbling experience because through it, I ended up in a sugaring certification class. Thankfully, I had begged the instructor to teach me also how to do a Brazilian and she had agreed.

After learning how to sugar, I felt compelled to create a space in Oak Harbor where people could come and get esthetic services in a clean, comfortable and chic environment! So, in 2006 Sugar came to be in one of the suites upstairs in The Chimes Building. Over the next decade I worked to hone my skills and to grow the business as an owner/operator.

And then, in late 2015 I decided to expand the business and (feeling terrified), I hired my very first employees. On January 4, 2016 we opened the doors to the newly renovated and expanded Studio Sugar! I can remember as we were organizing the new treatment rooms, wishing and hoping for the communities support. I am so grateful that those dreams are coming true. Now, we are a squad of seventeen in our Oak Harbor location. And in 2019, Stefanie opened a Sugar Studio in Hanford, CA. I’m so happy to say that the community there is also so supportive and her business is thriving!

You know, I’ve learned so much in the past few years and while not all my lessons were fun ones, I send all my teachers gratitude. I am who I am because of these lessons. And if I’ve learned one thing it is that beauty is always there, waiting to be revealed, you just gotta look for it. If you need help rediscovering your beauty, I hope you’ll come and allow us to be of assistance.

XO,

Jen
